SANTA MAGDALENA, Sorsogon — More than 8,000 residents have evacuated their homes as continuous rains from Tropical Storm Kristine (international name: Trami) caused severe flooding across parts of Sorsogon province.

According to Myra Relativo, head of the provincial social welfare and development office, a total of 8,658 evacuees have been recorded based on initial reports from local government units.

“We have already provided hot meals for stranded individuals in Matnog, and distributed food packs to those in immediate need in Pilar town,” Relativo said.

She also noted that contingents stranded due to the Kasanggayahan Festival were given cash assistance.

Relativo assured the public that the provincial government has ample resources for relief efforts.

“We have enough stockpiled resources, and the Department of Social Welfare and Development has provided additional support,” she added.

Meanwhile, the provincial health office reported eight minor injuries related to the storm.

Floodwaters also submerged the Matnog Medicare and Community Hospital in Matnog town on Tuesday.

Local police and rescuers have been deployed to assist stranded residents and evacuees, while road clearing operations are ongoing. INQ
